1. How did Refinery Coffee start?
Funnily enough, it actually started with a Blackboard Coffee Class! Brendan’s passion for coffee started through cycling, as it was always a part of his post-ride ritual. So one Christmas Gabrielle bought Brendan a Blackboard Coffee barista class and from there, his obsession with coffee has just kind of snowballed. Then after finding himself in a job he hated, he decided to take a leap of faith and started Refinery Coffee with Gabrielle.
2. Why did you choose Blackboard Coffee?
We choose Blackboard Coffee for many reasons, firstly it’s important to us to support local business so we love that is is a Gold Coast based roastery. Secondly, we love that it is sustainably and ethically sourced and we know exactly where our beans come from. Lastly, quality and consistency are also really important to us and we knew that Nick and the team at Blackboard would provide us with the tools, support and training necessary to achieve that.

3. What is the best part of owning a cafe?
We have always loved that cafes are the beginning – the beginning of friendships, ideas and your day. We love that we get to be a part of that each day and that we get to meet so many different and interesting people who we wouldn’t otherwise run into. Of course, taste-testing new dishes on the menu is always a highlight too!
4. To combat the current times, how have you adapted your business?
We’ve launched our new website complete with our online store which includes Blackboard Coffee as well as a great range of pantry items like sourdough, milk, our house-made GF vegan granola and tomato relish and more. You can also order your food and coffee takeaway by texting our shop phone to avoid waiting. And we’ve also launched some tasty take-home dinner options for pick up and delivery. It’s a challenging time for everyone but we’re doing our best to adapt!
